Halifax static scenery version 2
Files contained in Halifax2.zip
Halifax2.doc this file
Halifax2.sc1 unenhanced static scenery
Hal2-e.sc1 enhanced scenery file
182yhx.mod startup mode
NOTE: version 1 was never released.
NOTE: SD-12 is required.
This scenery file was created, other than for the enjoyment of creating it,
because there is definitely a lack of good Canadian scenery east of Toronto.
I hope that you will appreciate that this is my first attempt at creating a
scenery file that accurately represents an existing city, and as such, the
limited nature of my "creative techniques" may be evident. For the most part,
the scenery was created from memory of a recent trip to visit a friend.
However, a lot of information came from pictures in travel brochures, a road
map (city streets), and a highway map (out-lying highways).
The process of creating the scenery can be very time consuming, especially
if enhancements become involved. For this reason, many buildings have yet
to be included in the file, and are forth coming in later versions. That is
not to say that the file is devoid of buildings!!! Included are the Xerox
Towers (nicely done but in the wrong location), Sheraton Hotel (needs to be
revised), Maritime Hall, Clock Tower, City Hall, St. Paul's Church, and of
course, my friend's apartment building. In addition to the buildings, look for
the highly detailed roads (including the Mackay, and MacDonald bridges), and
most of the slips in Halifax Harbour, and Point Pleasant Park.
Scenery Disk 12 is required for a couple of reasons. First, the coastal
detail on the default map in FS is not only very poor, but the shoreline
is in the wrong location, and the harbour does not exist. Additionaly, all of
the nav-aids, save two, are on the scenery disk.
Both of the major airports in the area (Halifax International, and Canadian
Forces Base Shearwater) are included with SD-12, but some detail has been added
in this file. Something that you may enjoy is the accurate Cat II ILS
approach lighting for the International's runway 24. Shoot the approach and
see what it's like. All of the equipment buildings have been added to the
airport property (localizer antenae, glide path and runway visual range
towers, and the vortac at Shearwater, etc.), but due to a fading memory, I
don't recall what the terminal buildings and hangers were like. They will be
included in the next release.
There is only one mode at this time. It places you in a 182 on the ramp at
the International. The city is about 20 miles to the south west. A good
trip to take in the detail is to fly south over to Shearwater for a crash and
dash, then turning north west over the harbour to take in the sights of
Halifax. Try it at night using the enhanced file (hal2-e.sc1).
Like I said, in some respects the scenery is spartan, but in the next version
look for correction of the Xerox Towers, and Sheraton, as well as the convention
Centre, Bewery Centre, the Historic Properties, and Maritime Museum, plus more
down town. Also, some detail of the many Universities in Halifax will be
included, as well as the airport terminals and surrounding buildings such as
the Pratt and Whitney facility etc.
I hope to be able to detail the harbour with some navy, passenger and
commercial shipping, but we will have to see what happens with the limited 60K
memory situation. Also, with more detail comes a slower frame rate, so it may
not be a good idea to get rid of older versions as the new ones become
available. It might work out okay with faster machines though. Version 3
should contain dynamic scenery, communication, 2 or 3 modes and maybe a demo
or two.
On a final note I would like to thank the people that make the enhancement
software available. It allows a sense of realism almost equal to the
simulator itself.
